La Merced Foundation for Shoeshine Kids

La Merced Foundation for Shoeshine Kids

This Foundation, located outside Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, works with Haitian children working as shoeshine kids on the streets of the capital. These children are illegal immigrants from Haiti and some are second or third generation in the Dominican Republic. The children have little opportunity to attend school and they work as shoeshine kids in the city to help provide a living for their families. The La Merced foundation works in these communities to bring educational opportunities to the children, as well as health care, nutrition support, and recreational activities.

CAFE began support of this project in 2014 to upgrade and provide supplies for a small school room located in the community. Here the children receive remedial help for their learning; many of them are very far below their grade level for their age.
